BART Critical Mass?

Greetings all-

I am starting to get really frustrated with BART bike policy, especially in Oakland. I am interested in organizing a BART critical mass, in which a large number of folks attempt to board a BART train/station during prohibited hours.

Any interest?

Have you ever taken the Bike Shutttle? It leaves from MacArthur Bart station to Transbat Terminal during those times. Check the Caltrans website for times.

Thanks for the heads up, definitely somewhat helpful if you are near MacArthur and feel like riding a bus over the bay bridge while stopping on Treasure Island.

However, I am concerned with the often hostile attitudes I find riding BART with a bike from station attendants and inappropriate policy that at times even feels discriminatory towards bikes. For instance, not allowing bikes in stations during times when the station is almost always empty. Check out the 19th st. BART stop at 6:15 p.m on a weekday, and especially westbound trains. Unfortunately, you cannot even have your bike in this station during that time. BART needs to revaluate their policy towards bikes, and I am suggesting direct action to demonstrate this need. Public transit and Bikes should be like peas and carrots, not disallowed because of thoughtless policy.

        I hate BART.
If I may say so. Its crap for bikes and its crap for you who live in the east bay and come out on the weekends in SF and don't want to drink and drive.
        I'm so happy I ride a bike...cause I can't stand MUNI as well.
Anyways...hope everyone has a great weekend!

I relly on Bart and I do pretty well sans auto.(thats without a car). I ride Bart all the time somtimes leaving a beater bike at MacArthur and at 16th St. The Bart situation has really improved in the last few years. Too bad you weren't riding a bike in the late 80s and early 90's. You had to have a bike permit or else you were fined.

I rent a car if I have too. Its not that hard people.
And I believe bikes are allowed into Sf during commute hrs but you have to exit at Embarcadero..
  • Critical Mass rides are fun, but BART also has a body set up to deal with your issues:

    www.bart.gov/guide/bikes...sk_force.asp

You might want to contact the task force's staff member to get an explanation of the rationale for the Oakland rules, and the likelihood that the Task Force/Board would be open to adjusting them.

Don't forget to tell them how much you love BART, Michael.
      LOL!
      • Wendee that's not fair.

I have my issues with BART--no late night service, not enough trains at night/on Sunday, nowhere to stick bikes on the trains, too expensive, the ventilation in the cars can suck, etc.--but all in all, it's not a bad service. It's a lot better than riding Muni.
